Punta Gorda is situated on the banks of Charlotte Harbor on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, roughly mid-way between the larger cities of Sarasota to the north and Ft. Myers to the south. Punta Gorda’s history can be traced back to the early 1500’s with the first landings by the Spanish explorers Juan Ponce de Leon and Hernando De Soto. Punta Gorda has a population of 17,000, encompasses approximately 15 square miles, and is the only incorporated town in Charlotte County as well as the county seat.
Punta Gorda has a unique downtown historic district featuring many beautiful “Old-Florida” style tin-roofed homes which have been included on the National Register, as well as traditional brick covered streets lined with tall royal palm trees, decorative street lamps, antique shops, restaurants and art galleries. Punta Gorda’s picturesque waterfront area and many waterfront public parks also add to the town’s charm. The soon to be completed City Marina will also add to the city’s current reputation as a haven for boating and sport fishing. Punta Gorda has been named several times by Forbes magazine, Money Magazine, and MSN as one of the top ten best small-cities to live in America.
